Season One | Episode Two

June 19th, 2018

For a culture that seems to be so concerned with fame, I don’t think we examine it closely enough.

Last year, I became obsessed with trying to understand the basics principles behind this social phenomenon. How does it work? Where does it come from? How can it be leveraged? Each question begged the next. I eventually stumbled upon a book called Gods Like Us: On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame written by Ty Burr of the Boston Globe. It turns out Ty has spent years thinking about and researching this exact topic and has distilled his findings into one of the most piercing and eloquent books I’ve ever read. I just had to get Ty on the phone to discuss further. He spent a generous amount of time exploring these inner workings with me and you can find the entire conversation below. You can also find it on your podcast platform of choice.

Quick heads up, due to some technical inexperience on my part, the sound quality at the beginning is a bit spotty, but! – we fixed the issue on the fly and from about twenty minutes on it’s crystal clear. Bear with us through that and I think you’ll be really intrigued by what Ty has to say. I’m gonna let him take it from here – if you want to check out his book, you can find it here > (Gods Like Us: On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame) and if you want to check out his website, you can find that here as well (tyburr.com).

Hope you enjoy.
