Season One | Episode Three

June 28th 2018

If you’ve ever seen Inside Out, you may have noticed how well they used novel perspectives to communicate complex emotional material. I’ve long considered it self-evident that Pixar’s team tops the list of world class storytellers, but even with such high expectations, this film absolutely blew me away. At the time, I had no idea who Simon Rich was, but having since become familiar with his work, it’s obvious that Inside Out has his fingerprints all over it.

Simon is a comedic force of nature. While attending Harvard University, he served as the president of The Harvard Lampoon and went on to land a gig at Saturday Night Live where he spent a few years before being recruited by Pixar. He’s also written for The New Yorker and has authored several books including collections of short stories and, at the time of this writing, two novels. Zac and I first met Simon while working on the set of Man Seeking Woman, the hysterical  FXX Series he created and served as show runner for.  I remember first seeing him strolling around set repping suspenders and a flip phone and thinking “Alright, what the fuck is going on here?”

After looking him up, Zac and I developed a small obsession with his work and subsequently tore through all his books in the span of about a week. We caught him at the wrap party and exchanged a few words but wanted the chance for a more in-depth conversation so we could find out more about his process. Simon was a bit strapped for time so we only got to touch on a few things here, but it’s definitely worth the listen. Hope you enjoy!
